Data · AI Consulting Market · researched October 27, 2026
A first AI project for a small business is usually priced at $5,000 to $25,000 for a single-workflow pilot or a strategy assessment, and independent US AI consultants list $150 to $350 an hour. Freelance marketplace rates start near $35 to $60 an hour; large firms run $350 to $500+ an hour. For scale, a Nashville management analyst on staff earns a median $49.35 an hour (BLS, May 2025). What it means
The same AI job can be quoted at $50 or $500 an hour. Marketplace freelancers sit at the low end, independent US consultants in the middle and large firms at the top. Agencies listed on Clutch often set project minimums well above a small-business budget [8]. For an owner-led business, the useful comparison is a fixed price for one workflow against the hours that workflow costs your team today.
Most rate figures come from consultants' own pricing guides rather than independent surveys. The one survey-based US benchmark found, IEEE-USA's, puts independent technical consultants at a median $180 an hour [4].
| Level | Price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Managed AI services, one firm's price list | from $1,500 a month | Main & Machine[6] |
| Essential advisory (5 to 10 hours a month) | $2,000 to $5,000 a month | Leanware[3] |
| Standard (10 to 25 hours a month) | $5,000 to $15,000 a month | Leanware[3] |
| Fractional chief AI officer | $5,000 to $30,000 a month | Groovy Web (citing AY Automate)[5] |
Published price ranges for discovery, pilots and builds. The scale is logarithmic so a $3,000 audit and a $150,000 agency project fit on one chart.
Surveys disagree by a factor of three, mostly because of who they ask. Census asks a random sample of all employer businesses about the last two weeks; vendor and member surveys ask their own customers. Read Census as the floor.
What it means
In the Federal Reserve's survey of 6,525 small employers, 46% use AI, but just 7% of those users have fully integrated it [10]. Goldman Sachs finds the same gap: 14% fully integrate AI into core operations [13]. Half of small and midsize businesses already lean on an outside partner or IT provider for AI [20], and in Tennessee nearly 63% of employers say they use AI to complement workers [21].
The barriers owners name are knowledge and fit more than price: privacy, expertise and choosing tools lead the 2026 lists.

Third-party market estimates. Scopes and methods differ and are mostly behind paywalls, so read these as direction, not precision. They agree on two things: the market is growing about 20% to 34% a year, and large enterprises still do most of the buying.

BLS median hourly wages for the staff roles an AI consultant often stands in for. Refreshed from BLS each year. A staff wage excludes benefits, payroll taxes and overhead, so it is not a like-for-like billing rate.

Two kinds of numbers are on this page. Live numbers are pulled on every refresh: BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics for the Nashville metro and the US, and the Census Business Trends and Outlook Survey AI question. Researched numbers were read on each cited page by Socket Solutions and are re-checked every quarter.
No independent survey of AI consultant rates or small-business AI project prices exists yet. Rate and project ranges here come from consultants' published pricing guides, freelance marketplaces, one firm's own price list and a directory, and are labeled as such. Nothing on this page is Socket Solutions' own pricing. Market-size figures are third-party estimates. Survey results use each publisher's own definitions of small business and of using AI.
