What it means
Federal agencies run some of the largest document operations anywhere, and 230 paperwork AI systems are already in daily use there. The jobs are the same ones a law office, insurance agency or medical practice does: read what comes in, sort it, summarize it and answer it. 76 of these use cases are flagged high-impact, meaning they can affect people's rights or safety and carry extra review requirements; the pattern that works is AI does the first pass and a person makes the decision.

This page uses the 2025 inventory: 3,611 individually reported use cases from 41 agencies. It does not include Department of Defense, intelligence community or national security systems, or use cases agencies are permitted to withhold.
A use case counts as paperwork when it matches one of the rules shown above. Keyword rules miss some cases and catch a few that are only partly about documents, so read the counts as a close estimate. "High-impact" is the agency's own designation.
